Flames v Westbury
Flames 9 Westbury 2 (HT Flames 5 Westbury 2)
Man Of Match: George H
A game, not of two halves, but four quarters for the Flames on Saturday.
After a good start, consolidating on a goal within the first minute, the Flames went on to control the game with some assured play over the first fifteen minutes. The first swap-out of players signalled the start of the worst 15 minutes of Flames play this season. It was disappointing to see the boys play without shape in the effort to score goals against a weakened Westbury side. This single focus to score through direct play led to ineffective, flat attack, and inadequate protection at the back due to an absent midfield. The play gradually deteriorated to the point where Westbury started to gain some confidence through our selfish, undisciplined approach, and led to them out-scoring us 2-1 over the last 10 minutes of the half.
The second half started with a refocused Flames side and the boys went on to play with good width and depth to score some very nice team goals. A game with many lessons.
Dan T
Marshalled the defence well, especially when under pressure during the 'missing midfield' phase. Made some strong tackles and continues to look to find his own players when playing the ball out.
Adam V
Looking ever more secure in goal, did well to get a firm hand on a very good goal-bound shot. An excellent second half debut in defence. Calm on the ball, good distribution and well considered positioning.
Ashley W
A great debut at left wing back. So much energy and enthusiasm, ran up and down the channel all match. Shows growing confidence by starting to consider his passes rather than just clearing. But for an outstanding performance from George H, would have been Man Of The Match.
George H
A tower of strength at the centre of the back. Strong tackling and a commitment to get back when beaten. Made many goal saving tackles.
Adam D
Played in three different positions during the match, all well commanded. Kept his position well and always looking to make penetrating runs when able.
Jason T
Jason's last game with the Flames before moving from the area. Good running as ever and it was pleasing to see him smash a trade-mark goal to send him off in style. Jason, you were great to coach, we've enjoyed having you in the squad.
