DHUFC Under-12 Girls vs Swindon Town Ladies

Sunday 31st October 2004 Swindon Town Ladies A vs DHUFC Under-12 Girls

It may seem strange congratulating the girls on losing 8-1 today but those who saw the game know how hard they worked against a very strong Swindon Town team. Swindon have a number of School of Excellence players in their team and their first two league games yielded them over 30 goals so everything is relative.

Both sides hit the post on numerous occasions, I think three each, and our girls did enough to make Swindon work very hard. All contributed to a great team effort and if we can play like that against all of the other sides then we will have some great games to watch. Rhiann deserved her goal for a tireless performance, covering every blade of grass, with Rachel not far behind her. Laura made a couple of brave saves bringing applause from both sets of spectators, and all the other girls could hold their heads high.

Wiltshire FA Centre of Excellence

Congratulations are due to three of the DHUFC Girls who were selected for the Wiltshire FA Centre of Excellence. Saphri L and Lauren E from the Under-14s and Rhiann D from the Under-12s have been selected and have already represented the Wiltshire Centre of Excellence in a tournament held at Millfield School in Somerset last Wednesday.

This a a terrific honour for these girls. Approx 70 girls were given a trial in the u-14 section and about 20 have been selected, and in the under-12 section 15 out of 36 were selected. This is also a great honour for DHUFC as this is the first time any of our girls (or boys????) have been selected to represent the County. The selected players also benefit from weekly coaching sessions in Devizes on Monday evenings and will play more fixtures during the season.

Several other girls attended trials for 4 weeks in September/October and were unfortunate not to have been selected. But hopefully they will also have gained from the experience and resolve to try again next season (not forgetting that in all cases they were in the younger year of their 2-year age band and will gain another years experience before next season's selection trials).

I hope to get more definite/precise information from Wilts FA, communication on this subject has been non-existent so far.

Well done girls, and good luck in future when representing the County.

Flames v Trowbridge Wanderers

Flames 7 Trowbridge Wanderers 1 (HT Flames 4 Trowbridge Wanderers 1)
Man Of Match: Ryan G

A good win for the Flames providing two positives; the first time we have beaten Trowbridge after three previous draws, secondly for the first time for several games we didn't allow our opposition to score in one of the halves.

Not our best performance by any means, we played well in patches and had sustained pressure for good periods of the match. However our defending and midfield failed to recover as well as I know we can. Overall a pleasing result, some good individual performances, but a need to concentrate and perform for the whole of the 60 minutes.

Adam V
With little to do, did well to stay focused to make some timely saves. Good hands, got across and down to several shots. Great kicking from hands.

Ryan G
A strong match working in the heart defence. Good communication with his defence, well directed to mark players, and compress play. Topped off an excellent performance with some decisive block tackling.

Ali E
Another strong game from Ali. Got forward well in the first half and made some great recovery runs when caught forward. Created our best team goal finished by Luke G, with a well placed cross.

Josh W
Lots of effort driving forward from midfield. A well earned hat-trick.

Jason T
Lots of runs from the front of the team, always working to make himself available. Put defense under pressure with some good chasing down. Rewarded with a brace.

Sam C
First appearance up front. Shielded ball well, offering the midfieldboth time and space to move into attacking positions. Can claim assists for three of the goals and was unlucky not to score from one of the two shots that hit uprights.

Flames v Calne Town Youth

Calne 3 Flames 1 (HT Calne 1 Flames 1)
Man Of Match: Adam D

Another good game from the Flames, who despite losing, were able to come away from the match with many positives and some excellent individual performances. Some notable events in the game:-

Adam D: Brilliant match in a new position. Despite being a right footed player, left wing-back suited his strengths. Strong tackling, positive runs with the ball, and an eagerness to return to defensive duties after forays forward.

Adam V: Made a couple of key saves despite having little to do throughout the match. Excellent push onto the bar in the second half and some good strong ground kicks.

Ryan G: Marshalled the defence well, his communication and understanding of how to compress the game is coming along well. Another match of strong tackling.

Josh C: Ran strongly with the ball and pushed forward in a new position at left midfield for the last 15 minutes.

George H: Held firm at the 'head' of the defensive line. Some key tackles at important times.

Sam C: Strong running, got up and down the pitch well, some good distribution of the ball.

Josh W: A strong first half at left midfield. Good carrying of the ball and some strong, accurate passing and shooting.

Oli P: Prominent in first half, not frightened to run with the ball and beat players.

DHUFC Under-10 Girls vs FC Chippenham 9 October 2004

Hope everyone enjoyed the match yesterday, it was an excellent result for the girls to beat FC Chippenham 5-1, and I think its fair to say we could have scored more. Nice also to see the goals being shared around with Elsie (2), Alison (2) and Hazel all contributing. All the girls played well and gave their best, especially in the second half when I thought we started to play some better football. Special mention to our two goalkeepers, Hannah and Sara who both proved reliable in goal. Katie H once again was very solid in defence and this week also improved her distribution. Sara had an excellent first half and Katie S was also very strong in defence and made some very strong, important tackles. Hannah took a little while to settle in an unfamiliar position (left back) in the 2nd half, but soon began to show some of the Hannah we knew from last season, I think more of a midfield role in future will work better. Debuts for India and Eleanor who showed great enthusiasm indicated that we also have strength in depth.

Things to work on include more talking on the pitch, and maybe less off it ;-) It never ceases to amaze me that when girls get onto a football pitch they seem to mysteriously lose the ability to talk. We also need to organise how we defend corners a bit better. The other area we need to work on is distributing the ball better once we have won a tackle.

Thanks to everyone for their help, especially Nick for refereeing, excellent job, even when you did celebrate one of Elsie's goals ;-) Sorry that I was unable to shout or even talk very much, I thought I had flu, but it would seem I had a bout of tonsillitis, which would explain my extremely sore throat, I probably shouldn't have been at the match, hopefully all should be well before next week.

Just to update everyone on the other results from the weekend:
Swindon Spitfires 0 Keynsham 3
Swindon Town 3 Swindon Badgers 1
Chippenham P Highworth P

This leaves the league table currently as follows (still looks pretty good):

1 Keynsham Town 3 2 1 0 7 2 7
2 Derry Hill Utd 2 2 0 0 7 2 6
3 Highworth Juniors 1 1 0 0 2 0 3
4 Swindon Town 3 1 0 2 5 6 3
5 Swindon Spitfires 3 1 0 2 3 5 3
6 Swindon Badgers 2 0 1 1 2 4 1
7 Chippenham Town 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
8 FC Chippenham 2 0 0 2 1 8 0

Club News (October)

Help Your Team, Talk to Your Team Secretary
Your Team Secretary is a key person in your child's football development and participation in team and club activities. They give their time freely to act on behalf of the coaching team to schedule and arrange matches, confirm player availability and selection, complete league documentation and many other activities.

Their task is a challenging one, and one very much removed from the glare of publicity. They really are the hidden heros of Derry Hill United. Each secretary has at least 12 sets of parents to communicate with and corral, and some have many more. Phone calls are both time consuming and costly, and each secretary is geared to, and encouraged to address their members through email, wherever possible. However you receive your team information, please help your secretary, to help you and your child take part in Team and Club activities, by responding to their requests as promptly as you can.

Each of your squad's contacts are detailed on the laminated team poster which was distributed at the end of September. The poster also provides details on match and training times, the training hotline and Club Committee contacts. If you don't have a poster please ask your secretary for one.

Help Your Team, Assist Your Coach
Our coaches all have challenging activities on both training and match days. There is preparation for the event, whether it be a match or training, supervision and observation, as well as instruction and debriefing of the players. In order to best utilize the knowledge and experience of our coaches I would ask you to allow them to focus on each of these tasks. This way your child will gain the most benefit from their commitment.

One way of releasing them to do more of this is to help erect, dismantle and put away equipment, goals, flags, cones etc after training or matches. This way your coaches can focus on talking to parents and players and offer guidance and advice on development etc. Sometimes I see coaches alone out on the field long after a session has finished, putting away equipment. They are parents like yourself, and can sometimes do with your support to take on tasks which don't require their expertise, and which would shorten the time they spend at the ground.

Supporting From The Sidelines
People tend to perform tasks less well when other demands are being made on their attention - kids playing football are no different.

We all need to experience a task many times before we can do it without thinking about it. Consider how difficult it was when you first started to learn to drive. As adults, with a fully developed input, perception and decision making process, we initially found it very difficult to carry out all the tasks required to control the car; change gear, accelerate, brake etc. and still have processing time left to think about the road and other vehicles, pedestrians etc. around us.

Consider that in their early years of football, your children are in a similar stage of sensory overload. For kids, with relatively little experience of football, most of their attention has to be focused on receiving, passing and moving, they have little processing capacity left to listen to instructions. The presence of crowds simply compounds their problem. They hear noise, the comments, the instructions, but in the heat of the game are unable to react appropriately. All of a sudden there are many distractions competing for their attention. So focusing on the ball and the game becomes harder. Even shouts of encouragement may be a distraction.

In summary I'd like to encourage you to support your child by attending and watching them play, however I would ask you, in their best interest and development, to limit your support to encouraging shouts ("Well Done", "Never Mind" etc.) and not instructions ("Mark Him", "Go Forward" etc.).

Oh and by the way, when was the last time you saw a professional footballer do exactly what a member of the crowd shouted at him to do!

Evening Training
The Club intends to facilitate some additional training sessions one evening of the week, starting in November. Not all groups will have such an opportunity due to coach/facility availability. This is an optional event and the Club will charge £2 per player for every session. Due to the nature of the facility (hard-court/limited space) and the availability of squad members (after school activities/bed-time etc.) groups will be made up of mixed age groups and the Club does not intend these sessions to replace weekend team activity, which is included as part of your membership payment.

Keep an eye on your mail to hear if your group is offering these sessions.

Term Break - No Training
The Club endeavours to give parents and players a break each term in co-ordination with the Primary School Year. Consequently there are no scheduled activities the weekend commencing Saturday 23rd October. Activities re-commence on Saturday 30th October. Please note there are exceptions to this rule - speak to your Team Secretary if you are in doubt of your squad's activity.

Remember all Team and Club events are recorded on the Club Calendar on the Wannadoo site.

Please register for access if you have not yet done so.

Welcome

Inevitably as the Club has grown keeping up to date with activity across all the groups has become more challenging. In order to try to find out more about what members are doing and thinking we have created this Weblog. This is your chance to share thoughts, successes and experiences with the rest of the Club.

Please only write appropriate comments, requests and observations to this log, as each posting is available for all the internet to view.
